NEW YORK (Monday, Oct 28, 2019) – During the internationally infamous weekend of Miami Art Week 2018, thousands gathered for the world premiere of Sleeping Beauty Dreams, a contemporary dance and art experience using innovative technology, which explores the age-old fable of Sleeping Beauty and for the first time revealing what Princess Aurora dreamt about during her 100-year slumber. Through a revolutionary fusion of visual arts, contemporary dance, light, groundbreaking real-time avatar technology and electronic dance music by bold face name collaborators, the performance unravels her passions, her fears, and her sinful desires. The technological feat is brought to life by production company, Magic Reality Group, with the use of four video projectors and 500 LED panels.

World-recognized prima ballerina, Diana Vishneva, played the princess alongside award-winning dancer Marcelo Gomes who played the prince. This is not a Disney On Ice style production. Each dance movement was met by other supporting dancers as well as larger-than-life avatars, mimicking their moves. The avatars were imagined and visualized by Tobias Gremmler, a famed digital artist that has developed design solutions for Apple, Samsung, Swarovski and Sony. The virtual characters are brought to life by a partnership between fuse* and Perception Neuron / Noitom, enabling them to move simultaneously with the performers, specifically Vishneva, as 14 motion sensors sewn in to her ornate costume instantly simlulate her movements.

“Theatre is a constantly transforming and evolving experience for audiences. It must reflect the technology and art currently relevant in society,” states Tobias Gremmler, Digital Artist for Sleeping Beauty Dreams. “The use of real-time data and technology helps to define the avatars that follow Sleeping Beauty on-stage. We believe this immersive experience for the audience is the future of performing arts.”

Audiences were physically and emotionally moved by the vibrating beats of electronic music by famed EDM pioneer, NOISIA’s Thijs de Vlieger, who wrote the original score. His music has been featured in Hollywood blockbusters and he has worked with some of the world’s biggest artists including Skrillex and deadmau5.

Industry tastemakers joining the cast and crew included the creator Rem Hass, choreographer Edward Clug, costume designer Bart Hess who works with Lady Gaga, and light artist Laurent Fort. A team of eight permanent crew members are responsible for managing the technology required to bring the production to life.

After the premiere in Miami at the Adriene Arsht Center, the distinct and imaginative production was met with awe and applause at its New York premiere the following week at New York City’s historic Beacon Theatre. Thousands flocked to the theater as the last chance in 2018 to see the performance.

With a Russian tour commencing this summer and a European tour set for 2020, the U.S. tour begins this Fall. The lead prince role on the U.S. tour will be played by Marijn Rademaker, an award winning ballet artist and principal dancer at the Dutch National Ballet. The role of the princess will be played by Diana Vishneva and/or Mi Deng, founder of Mi Ballet School in China and owner of Ballet Dreamworks Inc. Canada, depending on the city.
