For Chicago heavyweights SOiL, 2024 became an exciting and busy year of touring. They started in March by headlining in The Back To The 2000’s Tour along with their counterparts from Texas, nu-metal pioneers The Union Underground, playing exclusive material from their most popular albums that were released in the early 2000’s.

In August, SOiL takes off to Europe for a two-week European tour, The tour kicks off at the legendary Wacken Open Air Festival on August 2 and concludes on August 16 in Sulingen, Germany at the ReLoad Festival. In November 2024, the band returns to the UK for another headlining round for the first time since 2019.

When The Union Underground and SOiL teamed up for The Back To The 2000’s Tour, they took on board very special guests, an alternative metal band  Ra and nu-metal rockers Flaw, both with proven track records since the mid-nineties. The gang rocked the heart of America from Texas to Illinois for the entire month of March with 18 electrifying shows.

This tour brought fans back to the days when festivals like Ozzfest gave new bands a chance to break through to the masses when the Nu Metal scene was thriving. Each band on the tour not only had massive hit songs at the time but also toured together and joined forces to create a massive heavy music scene.

The Union Underground reintroduced their iconic album An Education In Rebellion, released in 2000 via Columbia Records, which they performed in its entirety along with hit single "Across The Nation" and a couple of unreleased songs from the new forthcoming album. The Union Underground frontman Bryan Scott noted: “Make no mistake, this is not a nostalgia tour. It’s the launch of a new chapter for the band and an opportunity for new generations of music lovers to discover us. And our longtime friends in SOiL are the perfect partners in crime for the experience!”

SOiL bassist Tim King remarks: “Bryan Scott and I came up with this idea quite some time ago. I’m so happy we were able to bring all these bands together for what is sure to be a great re-introduction to this genre of music. The first tour SOiL did on the Scars album was with The Union Underground in 2001. Here we are, over 20 years later, doing it again. It just proves that great bands can last the test of time.”

Summertime is not only for tanning on ocean’s beaches, snorkeling, or drinking margaritas. It is the time for huge open-air rock and metal festivals, and the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany is the hottest where SOiL will be sharing the Headbangers Stage on August 2 with such acts as Xandria, Alcatrazz, and Primal Fear, among others. Besides Wacken, SOiL will hit Brutal Assault Fest in Josefov, Czech Republic on August 8, Alcatraz Fest in Kortrijk Belgium on August 11, and ReLoad Fest in Sulingen, Germany, that will end SOiL European tour leg on August 16.

The band comments: “We’ve always loved touring Europe, especially during festival season. Being able to return to Wacken Open Air Festival after our amazing show last time in 2019 will be very exciting. Plus, we will be playing many festivals for the very first time (Brutal Assault, Alcatraz, and Re-Load). The select headline dates will be a great chance to play to a more intimate crowd on the days between festivals.”

The very next day after Wacken, on August 3rd, SOiL will be going to the Netherlands to continue their European tour with support from fellow label mates and progressive metal masters, Images Of Eden. The headlining dates will continue to Switzerland and Germany and include a stop at the Gebäude 9 music hall in Cologne, where dual female-fronted vixens Butcher Babies will be joining the pack for one night of metal madness.

Few bands embrace their identity with the theatrical gusto of Torchlight Parade. The St. Louis mortuary metal troupe has returned with Children of the Night, a full-length release through Pavement Entertainment that stands as much a celebration of horror culture as it does a statement of hard rock conviction. What makes Torchlight Parade compelling isn’t just their sound but the authenticity behind it.

Fronted by licensed embalmer and vocalist Matt Engel and his brother Doug, a hearse-driving lead guitarist, the band quite literally lives the world it projects on stage. That sense of gothic reality is further grounded by family ties, with Doug’s son Samuel locking down the low end on bass and Gavin Martin driving the pulse on drums. Together, they’ve forged not only a distinctive sound but an immersive live experience that pushes rock beyond performance into full-scale spectacle.

  • Oceans On Orion Find Catharsis in Chaos with “Met My Match” Oceans On Orion Find Catharsis in Chaos with “Met My Match”

A raw, confessional single that tears down façades while carrying forward the band’s evolving sound.

With their latest single “Met My Match,” Oceans On Orion push into darker, more vulnerable territory, crafting a track that’s raw in emotion and relentless in sound. Rather than offering closure, the song lingers in the aftermath, echoing the words spoken in haste and the recognition that our flaws are often reflected back by those we love. It’s confessional, chaotic, and painfully honest.

Confessional in tone yet explosive in delivery, “Met My Match” refuses to dress pain in metaphor or disguise it behind polished sentiment. Instead, it exposes the mess head-on, amplifying regret, chaos, and brutal self-awareness into something that feels both cathartic and cuttingly relatable. For anyone who has ever stared at their phone after a 2 a.m. text they wish they hadn’t sent, the song provides not comfort, but company in the wreckage.

  • Dystopica Unleash Semblance of Order: A Fierce New Chapter in Modern Metal Dystopica Unleash Semblance of Order: A Fierce New Chapter in Modern Metal

With their fourth record, Semblance of Order, Dystopica steps boldly into a new phase of creative evolution. Released through Pavement Entertainment, the EP serves as both a declaration and recalibration, signaling a move toward a heavier, more assertive identity while still honoring the melodic and progressive instincts that define their sound. Across all seven tracks and just over twenty-two minutes, the record delivers a concentrated statement of intent: faster, harder, and uncompromising in execution.

Produced by Nick Bellmore, whose resume includes work with iconic figures like Dee Snider, Corpsegrinder, and Hatebreed, the EP benefits from a production style that feels tight and modern without sterilizing the band’s natural edge, with a mix balancing weight and clarity. Compared to Perception (2021), Deception (2022), and Infinite Reflection (2024), this release feels more focused and deliberate, honing in on heaviness with songs that are concise, layered, and unmistakably memorable.

Do you remember US self-released hard rock / heavy metal CDs from the 1990s? Man, they were great things themselves, and far more often than not contained simply great music. Music for which record labels at that grunge times had no sympathy at all — but that music was still very interesting, not only for keen record collectors, myself included. Ask any respected hard’n’heavy lover about such CDs from early Seventh Omen or Vamp Le Stat, for example, and see (or hear?) what happens.
