Fashion District NW and Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) joined forces for a special red carpet style AFTERPARTY at the Hotel Theodore Seattle on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, following the screening of the “High & Low - John Galliano,” a documentary by Oscar®-winning director Kevin Macdonald about once-acclaimed fashion designer John Galliano, as a part of SIFF’s celebrating its 50th anniversary of praising the art of cinema in the city of Seattle.

The event delivered an immersive experience into the world of fashion and art, inspired by Galliano's revolutionary designs, controversial career, and eccentric character. The story of the legendary designer, portrayed in Kevin Macdonald’s masterpiece, brought excitement and new inspiration to Seattle’s fashion enthusiasts, industry professionals, and admirers of Galliano's iconic creations and unparalleled vision and influence.

The fashion AFTERPARTY was a dress-to-impress gathering where guests discussed the film, mingled and networked, and expressed their love for films, fashion, and style. It was definitely the night to remember when guests made new connections and enjoyed glamorous Red Carpet and Step-And-Repeat photos to preserve the momentum.

“High & Low – John Galliano” was an official selection of the 50th Seattle International Film Festival! It was screened at the AMC Pacific Place on Friday, May 10, 2024, and Wednesday, May 15, 2024, and created a real buzz across Seattle fashion communities.

This event marked a new chapter in growing Seattle fashion by converging film documentary with a styled fashion party, proving the relevance and importance of the stories behind influential figures such as John Galliano in unveiling the turbulent and controversial world of high fashion and the role these stories play in influencing and enriching the cultural experience of diverse and sophisticated Seattle’s public.

Oscar®-winning director Kevin Macdonald opens his documentary about the once-acclaimed fashion designer John Galliano with the 2011 video of the offensive and antisemitic rant he drunkenly spewed at his favorite bar in the Jewish quarter of Paris. Right away, we know this movie will be as much about the fall of the fashion star as his rise and whether or not it’s possible for him to redeem himself.

The fact that there is no definitive answer by the end makes High & Low all the better. But before we know how far he’s fallen, we need to see the heights he achieved. He burst onto the scene not long after graduating when his first collection was a hit. His rise was meteoric, his collections theatrical, and soon he was heading up Givenchy and then Dior. Along the way, he accepted more and more responsibility, took on more and more work, partied more and more, and indulged his addictions.

A master at surface beauty without always looking for the meaning underneath, he would sometimes get in trouble for shows like “Tramps,” a high-fashion line inspired by the homeless. But throughout his rise to fame, fashion editors and supermodels loved him and loved working with him. Many of them are interviewed for this doc, including Anna Wintour, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Charlize Theron. As for the redemption arc, by the end he’s spoken to Jewish leaders to learn just how hurtful and offensive his comments really were, and he tells the camera that he’s learned his lesson. It’s up to you to decide if you believe him.
