Sampa The Great raised to stardom in just a few short years and reached her highest self to date. The Zambian artist (born Sampa Tembo) has established herself as one of global rap’s most compelling and outspoken voices. Her new album, As Above, So Below released on 9 September 2022 through Loma Vista Recordings., emancipates the artist from expectations and enables her to stand in her truth as a woman, true to her talent with rich personality.
“It's a huge self-love note to myself,” she says. “You’re allowed to show your full range as a human being. It’s a personal journey because I wasn’t allowing myself to do that.”
As Above, So Below traverses Sampa’s memories of Africa through a self-exposed lens of authenticity and womanhood, while looking to the future of Africa’s relationship to the world and its global communities. A reflection of Sampa’s transitory upbringing, the record’s sonic hybridity throws recognition to the music coming out of the African diaspora today, while honoring the stories of those who tread previously.
The album reflects Sampa's perceptions of the outer world As Above, and So Below translates her inner self, revealing the wholesome version of herself— pure and honest.
